The Chances of Catching Ebola on a Kenyan Safari

Posted on November 12, 2014 at 4:30 pm

If you’ve always been interested in the idea of going on a safari, but have found the recent cases of Ebola developing throughout Africa worrying, you should be aware that all is not lost, most of these cases are occurring in west Africa, mainly among urban and semi-urban communities.

A country like Kenya, which is on the east of Africa, has so far had no confirmed cases of Ebola. This country is, even in times where a disease like this isn’t a concern, one of the top destinations for a safari holiday; where you will be able to see some of the most highly sought after animals on the continent, as well as some amazing geographic features.

Kenya is located within the Great Lakes region of of east Africa, and therefore has some of the most beautiful locations for you to visit and experience a 5 star Safari.

Cost of a South African Safari

Posted on September 18, 2014 at 10:28 pm

An African Safari holiday is not a low cost trip away by any means and you can expect to pay well in to the thousands for a week away with a reputable tour operator. The reason for this high cost all becomes clear when you arrive at your destination. A Safari holiday is a once in a life time experience and you will not be disappointed with your time away.

When booking a Safari holiday you need to consider all the costs involved. Obviously there are the flight and accommodation costs, but you need to check if there may be any hidden ones that you hadn’t thought about. Check whether you need to pay for transport between Safaris / parks (if required) and if so how much this will be. You may also be required to hire specific equipment or clothing if you do not have it. When booking your holiday check what is included and what isn’t in the price you have been quoted.

Safari Locations

Okavango Delta (Botswana) has the Okavango River. This cuts through the centre of Botswana’s Kalahari Desert, creating a glorious inland water system that gives life to a huge variety of birds and mammals. This can be a truly unique experience as you can see most of the wildlife from a traditional canoe, a mokoro. The delta floods every year covering over 16,000 km’s. The best time to view wildlife is during the peak of the flood, as the flooding recedes, new grass springs up and the wildlife tends to scatter.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Tanzania) includes the world’s largest crater. This acts as a natural enclosure for most species of wildlife found in East Africa. The Maasai still live within the conservation area, and it’s also home to Olduvai where some of man’s earliest remains have been found.

Hwange National Park (Zimbabwe) has an abundance of animals with over 105 mammal species. Hwange also has one of the largest populations of wild dogs left in Africa.

If you are looking for a true African experience, then you need to visit South Luangwa National Park in Zambia which is home of the “walking safari”. There are 60 different animal species, the rivers are filled with hippos and you may get to see prides of lions ranging up to 30 in size! There are also over 400 different bird species in this park alone. In the dry season the animals congregate around the waterholes, so you are sure to see an abundance of species.

If you want the classic African safari setting then the grasslands of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania will be the perfect destination for you. Here you can witness the migration of millions of wilderbeast, you may even be able to spot a lion kill, as you definitely have the landscape for it.

For a different type of safari then visit the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. Uganda is home to mountain gorillas, chimpanzees and many other mammals. In fact, almost half of the world’s population of mountain gorillas live here. Bwindi is also now a World Heritage site.

Kenya Safari Packages

Posted on July 19, 2014 at 11:45 pm

When thinking about a safari in Africa, Kenya is an excellent destination. There is a lot to see and discover, from the wildebeest herds of the Masai Mara to the pink flamingos of Lake Nakuru and the majesty of Mount Kenya to the country’s vibrant cultures. There are numerous options when you’re thinking about Kenya safari packages and yours could include the following:

Discovering the magic of Masai Mara

You have probably seen the images of the Masai Mara’s sweeping savannah plains, home to more than a million migrating wildebeest, other plains game and big cats as well as the Maasai tribe. You can experience all this for yourself, right in the middle of the bush, staying in a rustic bush camp or lodge. You’ll explore in vehicle or on foot, or even by hot air balloon!

Taking a Safari in Samburu

Located on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River is the dry, stark Samburu National Reserve, where you’ll find large herds of elephant, wild dog, big cats, buffalo, zebra, ostrich, waterbuck and giraffe. Bird life is prolific here, making it a great choice for birding enthusiasts. Activities you can enjoy during Kenya safari packages in Samburu include bird watching, river rafting, game drives, walks and cultural experiences where you can meet local Samburu people and experience their unique culture.

Seeing the Great Rift Valley and South-Western Kenya

The Great Rift Valley is well known as the land of mountains and lakes, including Lake Nakuru, a protected world heritage site, famous for being home to thousands of flamingos. It runs right through Kenya, creating some spectacular scenery along its way. Back in the 1980s, the Lake Nakuru National Park was a rhino sanctuary and so now you’ll have good chances of seeing these endangered, prehistoric looking creatures.

Enjoying beach and island breaks

If you’re looking to combine some time relaxing on a beach with your safari then a few days on the Kenya coast can be added easily to Kenya safari packages. The warm waters of the Indian Ocean here are crystal clear, perfect for snorkelling, diving and lazy fishing trips on board a traditional dhow. If you’re still feeling a little adventurous many hotels and beach lodges offer water sports so you can try your hand at things like kayaking or windsurfing. Lamu Island, a protected world heritage site, is full of history and culture and is a real treat to explore.
